On Tuesday, March 25th, students and faculty at Hawthorn celebrated the Feast of the Annunciation. Dr. McCleary addressed the school to discuss the significance of the day and to pray a decade of the Rosary. Afterwards, students enjoyed athletic contests, parachute games, egg and spoon relays, and other activities followed by pizza and ice cream. In the afternoon, all students participated in the Competition of the Bard. Judges listened to poetry recitations by representative students from each grade level, and each class performed a musical selection.
In the Kindergarten - Grade 2 age category, 1st grader Adaya Espana was recognized for her recitation of “Winter” by William Shakespeare, and 2nd grader, Julian Toretta, also received a prize for reciting “Rebecca, Who Slammed Doors for Fun and Perished Miserably” by Hilaire Belloc. In the lower school age category, Penelope Soltes was recognized for her recitation of “The Listeners” by Walter de la Mare. In the middle school, prizes were awarded to Celeste Mignone for her recitation of “The Village Blacksmith” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Nate Park for reciting William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 “Shall I Compare Thee to a Sumer’s Day”.
For the musical selections, the Kindergarten class was recognized for their performance of “The United States” during which the students enthusiastically recounted the names of all 50 states in alphabetical order. The Lower School Girls were recognized for their performance of “Eerie Canal”. Both the Middle School Girls and Middle School Boys were awarded prizes for their performances of “What Wondrous Love is This” and “Rattlin’ Bog”, respectively.
