On Tuesday, October 15th, the Bedford Fire Department visited Hawthorn to teach grades K-1 the basics of fire safety. The following week, Hawthorn girls in Grades 2-9 enjoyed a similar presentation.  Students learned how to respond to smoke detector alarms in their homes, what number to call in an emergency, and how to "stay low and go" in the event of a fire.  Local firefighters explained the volunteer nature of their jobs in service to the local community.  Firefighters here in Bedford work in everyday jobs as professors, nurses, business professionals, mothers and fathers, and even college students!
