Buses

Busing at Hawthorn School

Hawthorn School is proud to partner with New York State to offer free busing for students residing within a 15-mile radius of the school in grades K-9, as mandated by New York State Education Law. This service ensures that students have a convenient, safe, and reliable way to travel to and from school each day.

Busing can be a great way to give students a sense of independence and camaraderie as they travel with peers, and also help busy parents avoid the drop-off and pick-up lines.

Key Details

  • Eligibility: Students living within 15 miles of Hawthorn School are eligible for free busing. Distance is measured by the shortest available route.

  • Scheduling: Buses are designed to arrive and depart at times that align with the school’s schedule (school start at 8:00am and dismissal at 2:30pm) to ensure efficiency and minimize wait times.

  • Late Bus Options: For students participating in after-school activities, late bus transportation may be available upon request.

How to Request Busing

Parents must submit a written request to their local school district by April 1 of the preceding school year or within 30 days of moving to the district. This form is generally found on your local school board website under "Non-Public Transportation Request".

Centralized Pickup Points

For families residing just beyond the 15-mile limit, centralized pickup points may be an option, depending on arrangements with the local district. Parents are responsible for transporting their child to and from the pickup point.

Additional Support

If you have questions or need assistance with your busing request, please contact our office or the local school board's transportation office. Our team is here to help you navigate the process and ensure your child can benefit from this service.

Busing is an integral part of our commitment to providing equitable access to education while fostering independence and building a strong school community. We encourage all eligible families to take advantage of this opportunity!
